The award-winning director spoke on his upcoming adaptation and the direction he is taking with the beloved character. In a significant change for the fairy tale, del Toro is grounding his story in a realistic setting. Pinocchio takes place during the rise of fascism in pre-World War II Italy, where a foreboding military officer controls the area.
